The BPSB has been a hard-working group from its outset and the following are a summary of accomplishments.

  •  The Black Parallel School Board awarded four $500 scholarships to local high school students;
  • Conducted “Operation Doorstep” within the Rosa Parks Middle School attendance area and distributed 150 BPSB informational packets to residents.
  • Conducted training sessions centered on: Parent/Family/Student/Community Involvement, No Child Left Behind Act 2001, Every Student Succeed Act 2014, Local Control Accountability Plan, the Williams Act, Education Protocols, and Student Empowerment, Special Education, School to Prison Pipeline;
  • Conducted Parent Training Workshops on Common Core, How to make your home education friendly, LCAP and Restorative Justice;
  • BPSB investigated and addressed 7 Sacramento City Unified District school sites practices;
  • Hosted Nubian Jewel Reading Circle presentation with Ruthie Bolton in October, 2011;
  • Participated in the 3 Annual Black Star Project Million Father March;
  • SCUSD adopted a new Whole Child Discipline Policy; new school discipline policies and Administrative Regulation;
  • Black Parallel School Board provided testimony to California State Assembly Shirley Weber's Zero Tolerance (Suspension and Expulsion) Hearings at the Capitol; ·
  • Black Parallel School Board, in a partnership with the California Endowment, established the Zero Tolerance Youth Leadership Team, Restorative Justice Collaborative and the Community Priority Coalition (LCAP);
  • The  Black Parallel School Board  participated in a community conversation event featuring a play titled "Willful"  and “Zero” in partnership with the Cornerstone Theater and Assembly member Roger Dickinson's office;
  • 53 youth from the Sacramento Charter High School, Kennedy High School, Inderkum, Grant Senior High and American Legion made testimony and public appearances;
  • Three youths made public presentations at the State Board of Education hearings, Black Minds Matter and Sacramento High’s and “school to prison tour.”;
  • 3 Zero Tolerance Youth Committee members were interview by Channel 10 News and the story was reported in USA Today.

 

The Black Parallel School Board (BPSB) is a community organization developed to work parallel to the Sacramento City Unified District Board of Education. Its major responsibility is to support the educational growth and achievement of Black students.
